CARY CORBITT, PGA, INDUCTED INTO CAROLINAS PGA HALL OF FAME
Long-Time Sea Pines Executive Recognized for Service to Community and Profession
Hilton Head Island, S.C. (Feb. 29, 2024) –The Sea Pines Resort is honored to announce that Cary Corbitt, PGA, has been inducted into the Carolinas PGA Hall of Fame Class of 2023.
Corbitt, also known as “Mr. Hilton Head Golf,” has been a member of the Carolinas PGA for 46 years, spending the entirety of his career at The Sea Pines Resort. He spent three years as Head Professional of the Atlantic Dunes and Heron Point courses, three years as Director of Golf and Head Golf Professional at Harbour Town Golf Links, Atlantic Dunes and Heron Point, 13 years as Director of Golf of these three courses and Sea Pines Country Club, 17 years as the Director of Sports Operations for The Sea Pines Resort, finishing his final chapter there as the Vice President of Sports and Operations before retiring in 2022.
Early in his career, Corbitt had the opportunity to shape and guide the Hilton Head Island golf community, which he accomplished at all levels of the game. Today, golf is a significant economic driver in the region and his role in heightening and growing the sport has had a large impact.
As co-founder of the HHI Junior Golf Association, Corbitt helped start a junior scholarship program that has benefited dozens of young golfers from area. He also was instrumental in the development of a First Tee program in Hilton Head. Corbitt has received numerous honors and awards over the years including being twice named Hilton Head PGA Chapter Professional of the Year and was inducted into the Lowcountry Golf Hall of Fame in 2016.
Along with fellow PGA Professionals, Corbitt was instrumental in the founding of the Lowcountry Chapter of the Carolinas PGA. In 1997 he was named the Carolinas PGA Section Resort Merchandiser of the Year and Golf Professional of the Year. The following year, he received the Section’s prestigious Bill Strausbaugh Award.
Corbitt has served or is currently serving in leadership positions on several boards including his alma mater, Lander University’s Board of Trustees (Vice Chair), South Carolinas Golf Course Owners Association (Vice President), and the Lowcountry Chapter of the National Golf Course Owners Association (President). He is a board member of the Heritage Classic Foundation, currently serving as Chair of the Foundation’s Charities committee and of their Scholarship Program. Giving back and being involved in his community are his passions, which is evident by the impact he has made on so many lives.
The Carolinas PGA Section’s Hall of Fame is an exclusive group of the finest PGA Professionals and other leaders in golf who have called the Carolinas home. The PGA of America lists 37 characteristics of PGA Professionals including being a motivator, community leader, business manager, accomplished player, trained instructor, counselor, and friend. The Section’s Hall of Fame members have displayed traits such as these over the span of their careers to the benefit of their community and the game of golf. These individuals have positively impacted countless lives through professional and personal relationships.
