As much of California wrestles with growth and the specter of overdevelopment, by some miracle the 31 square miles that comprise Santa Lucia Preserve — three miles southeast of Carmel-by-the-Sea — remain intact. The residential real estate community, located on the coastal foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains, is limited to a total of 350 homes.
