The Iconic Bridge of Shawnee Signaling the beginning of golf season, the iconic bridge of The Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort is installed each year at this historic resort which boasts the first Tillinghast course ever built. Spanning the Delaware River in northeastern Pennsylvania, the bridge includes 1015 pieces of lumber connected with 2610 bolts (95% of all supplies are re-used each year) and 13 individual sections spanning 284 feet. This wooden bridge is comprised of Southern Yellow Pine and Douglas Fir.
The bridge was designed in 1911 by C.C. Worthington, a wealthy New York engineer and business owner who built The Buckwood Inn, now known as The Shawnee Inn.
The Nature and Child Reunion In a world of ipods, cell phones, and computer games, there appears to be a growing need to restore the bond between nature and children to improve the health and well-being of both. At Wintergreen Resort, The Wintergreen Nature Foundation is unique in that it is a living sanctuary, preserving nature in the midst of potentially destructive elements and operates in the midst of the natural resources of its stewardship vision, where it can measure its laboratory by the square mile, not the square foot.
The Foundation is a special place where children can discover and enjoy the many plants, flowers and animals that live in the wild on the mountaintop and learn a respect for all living things. Its mission is to protect the heritage and beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia by encouraging the understanding, appreciation, and conservation of its natural and cultural resources.
Be Equipped Like a Tour Professional A favorite hideout of PGA Tour professionals during any given tournament week is the traveling equipment trailer. These high-tech workshops on wheels are where the pros go to have custom-fitted clubs built, get their lofts and lies checked, have their set re-gripped, grind their wedges, or just kick back for a few minutes to shoot the breeze.
Starting in April, the custom-designed tour trailer that has served TaylorMade-adidas Golf Tour Staff professionals for the past six years, which has visited hundreds of tour stops and in which thousands of TaylorMade clubs have been built, will be parked permanently at the Kingdom at Reynolds Plantation. The trailer, where custom-fit equipment will be built for Kingdom guests, will further solidify a visit to the Kingdom as the ultimate golf experience.
Nicklaus Dedicates Golf Courses at The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain Jack Nicklaus formally dedicated the Tucson area's first Nicklaus Signature Golf Course in 25 years at the end of March, celebrating the centerpiece of the high Sonoran Desert's new luxury resort golf community. The original 27 holes, along with a majestic clubhouse and tour-quality practice area of The Ritz-Carlton Golf Club, Dove Mountain were initially unveiled in January. Only six weeks after opening, it debuted on the international stage as host of the 2009 World Golf Championships Accenture World Match Play Championship, where Tiger Woods made his much-anticipated return to competition.
"I think it turned out to be a terrific golf course,ââ said Nicklaus, who led a group of about 150 invited guests on a walking tour of the Tortolita Course. This is a combination of tournament, resort and residential golf. People are going to be able to come here and have a nice golf course, an enjoyable playing experience. I'm very pleased with it."

Innovation Meets Conservation The Golf Club at Rainmakers, just north of Ruidoso, New Mexico, is named for a 12th-century shaman who was responsible for managing the precious commodity of water. RTJ II devised a plan to conserve this scarce resource with several innovative methods: • An on-course weather station connected to low distribution sprinkler heads, to ensure the grass is never watered unnecessarily • Fairways and greens lined with a polymer substance that traps and cools water so that the course can use 30 percent less water • Turf grasses and a grassing plan implemented to minimize water usage
